Moonstone & Rainbow Moonstone & Black Moonstone

Moonstones. You'd think that I'd be referring to crystals and stones that are related in more than just name, and with two, they're closer related but these are completely different stones. They are, in fact, minerals within crystalline rocks, not really crystals at all.

Let's begin with Moonstone. Moonstone is a very simple looking, opaque stone. It's coloration leads to the warmer colors of cream, beige, pink, red, brown, yellow or grey. It may have a touch of flash from the feldspar in it, but really very little catches the eye. It's a great stone for women's health, fertility, and intuition. This is not the moonstone of jewelry makers, though. For that, we move on to Rainbow Moonstone.

Rainbow Moonstone is what you see in all those pretty pieces of jewelry. It's know for that eye catching blue and purple flash in the translucent stone, that is simply stunning. Rainbow moonstone actually white with black flecks or even strips in it. The flash is much more stunning than you'd see in a moonstone. It brings harmony, positivity, and confidence. Be careful when buying Rainbow Moonstone as it's often faked with Opalite in jewelry, a man made glass with iridescence. Look for imperfections in the layers of feldspar to be sure you're getting an authentic stone. When buying a tumbled stone, look for black flecks.

Black Moonstone is another name for Larvikite. It isn't actually a moonstone at all, but more closely related to Labradorite, but dark grey in color. The feldspar is thumbnail sized, so the flash is smaller than in other feldspar stones. It's flash tends to lean towards the silver - blue spectrum. It's a stone for compassion and to open up psychic abilities.
